Arrival & public transport

In the middle of Germany and easy to reach.

The rural community of Harztor is located in the district of Nordhausen, nestled in the scenic southern Harz Mountains in the very north of Thuringia. As the name suggests, the rural community is the gateway to the Harz Mountains. The district town of Nordhausen is just a few kilometers away, while the state capital of Erfurt is around 80 km to the south. It takes about an hour to drive to us from Göttingen in the west and from Halle/Leipzig in the east. Harztor is conveniently located and also has several bus and train connections.

BY CAR

Harztor is located at the junction of the B4 and the B81, which lead across the Harz towards Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt respectively. The B4 also leads to the south. Harztor can be reached from the east and west via the A38 Südharz autobahn via Nordhausen.

BY RAIL

Trains run every half hour from Niedersachswerfen in the direction of Nordhausen and Göttingen. The Harzquerbahn has several stops in Niedersachswerfen, Ilfeld and Sophienhof. The railcars run every hour. The steam-powered Brockenbahn runs through the rural community twice a day.

BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT

In addition to public passenger transport via four bus routes, modern Combino streetcars also run hourly on the Harz narrow-gauge railroad network in the direction of Nordhausen alongside railcars and steam trains. Niedersachswerfen is also home to the charging station for quiet and modern electric buses.

Public transport network

Harztor is served by four bus lines, one streetcar line, the Harzer Schmalspurbahn (HSB) and Deutsche Bahn. A total of 28 stops and stations can be used by travelers. The route network map shows a branched network with important junctions.

The most important is Niedersachswerfen Ost. This is where the HSB meets streetcar line 10 from Nordhausen with three bus lines that continue from here in three directions. This is also where the modern electric buses operated by Verkehrsbetriebe Nordhausen recharge during their regular service breaks.

Niedersachswerfen, the only Deutsche Bahn (DB) train station, is also not far away. From here, you can travel to the district town or towards Lower Saxony.

On the website of the municipality of Harztor you will find a complete Overview of lines and stops.
