Neustadt: The Roland statue and the fresh air
A highlight for any visitor wishing to experience the historic Harztor is the climatic health resort of Neustadt. The town was officially designated a climatic health resort as early as 1890. The townscape is characterised by:
The Neustadt Roland statue (1730): It stands right next to the Ratskeller and symbolises market and judicial authority. Such a statue is a real rarity in the Harz.
The Old Town Gate (1412): Step back in time! The gate now houses a local history museum and is one of the oldest surviving buildings.
The ruins of Hohnstein Castle: High above the town stand the remains of the once-mighty ancestral castle of the Counts of Hohnstein. A perfect hiking destination with panoramic views.
Ilfeld: Monastic history and schools
The district of Ilfeld also contributes greatly to what we now refer to as historic Harztor . As early as the 12th century, Ilfeld Monastery was founded here, which shaped the region both culturally and economically. Later, this gave rise to the renowned monastery school.

A young municipality with an old soul
The political municipality of Harztor was formed on 1 January 2012 through the merger of Ilfeld and Niedersachswerfen. In 2018, Harztor expanded further: the villages of Neustadt, Harzungen and Herrmannsacker joined the municipality. Today, Harztor unites these five historic villages into a strong community in the Southern Harz.
