The Southern Harz on two wheels – experiencing nature
Whether you’re cycling over roots on a mountain bike, heading to the highest vantage points on an e-bike, or simply enjoying a leisurely ride through the valley with the family, Harztor offers cyclists the perfect blend of challenge and enjoyment.
Over hill and dale
Our countryside is perfect for a change of scenery. In the Bere and Zorge valleys, you’ll find well-maintained paths linking the villages of Ilfeld, Niedersachswerfen and Neustadt. But if you head into the woods, you can expect challenging climbs, dense beech forests and stunning views stretching all the way to the Brocken.
The right route for every gear
- For leisure cyclists and families: Stay in the valley! The paths between the villages are mostly flat and offer a leisurely stroll along the water’s edge or through meadows. Ideal for a short evening stroll or a Sunday outing with the children.
- For mountain bikers and sports enthusiasts: Looking for a bit of a thrill? Then head up there! Rides around the Poppenberg, to the Netzkater or up to Sophienhof will really put your calves to the test. Look forward to forest tracks, singletrack and plenty of elevation gain.
- For e-bike riders: Thanks to electric assistance, the Harz Mountains are no longer a daunting prospect. Climb the hills around Neustadt with ease or cycle as far as the ‘Hexenbesen’ in Rothesütte. With an e-bike, the whole of the Southern Harz becomes your playground.

Tip: Stamp hunt by bike
Hiking isn’t the only way to collect the coveted stamps for the Harz Hiking Badge. Many of our stamp boxes, such as the ones at the Poppenberg Tower or the Ziegenalm, are easily accessible by bike.
